Lost in Translation

Yesterday was a day to remember! My day started off with a new introduction. I stepped out of the shower to meet a new frienemy...a damn huge spider! Right on the side wall next to my shower (which by shower, I mean a large bucket with a pail like object that I use to splash water on myself). I waited for him to skirt down into the corner by the toilet and garbage can. I wrapped the towel around myself and went and got Barbara :) She went in and "killed" it. I returned to finish getting ready for class. I looked back in the corner where it was and saw legs sticking out from underneath the garbage can! Bahahaha. I think she just placed the garbage can on top of it and said it was taken care of. Not!
I went to class and things went well. It was a day that I realized how much I have learned, but I definitely need more practice speaking it. I can write it very well and do the grammar, but that's not going to get me very far :)
We went on a couple agency visits yesterday and it was such a great reminder of why I am here. First was SOS. It was an awesome facility that houses about 130 children. There are host mothers that they live with, on the grounds, and they have preschool and kindergarden classes there and the other children go to school in the community. It was really amazing to see the most happy, beautiful children in this wonderful facility. I could definitely see myself working in an organization like that.
Then we went to a girls home for abused girls. This facility was also nice and housed about 36 girls and only for 6 months. The girls talked with us a bit and they seemed to be very well taken care of. The staff presented us with the best merienda I have ever had! These carmelized fried bananas, and brownies. They also had lumpia, but it had pork in it :(
Overall, the agencies reminded me of what I'm doing here. To see there faces light up and to know that they are being protected, loved and encouraged is the best feeling I've had in a very long time. I get so excited to know that I get to be a part of a child's life and hopefully spark a change in them and/or just provide an unconditional love that they have never seen before.
Later that evening I came home to yet another brown out (one of the four we've been having everyday!) I went to the bathroom in the dark, quickly mind you because I did not want to encounter my frienemy again.
Then I joined Carol, Eva and their past host child Jerry for dinner at a Korean restaurant. There was so much food, some was great...some not so much, but overall the dinner was good and so was the conversation.
We came home and I went to go get ready for bed...in the bathroom! When I got up from doing my business, I went to flush and noticed the same damn spider underneath the toilet!!! So I went and got Barbara once again and said..."it's still in there!!!". She went in with a baggie and came back out with a small black clump in it, which makes me think...."how did that large spider curl into that small of a clump? I think not!"
This was my very eventful day! Full of blessings and obstacles. I hope that I might become used to the large spiders here, but in my heart I don't believe that I will. Just pray that I can sleep at night without thinking about them being everywhere I go :)
